Let me introduce myself

Hello there!

I have put off writing this introductory blog post for far too long. Some might even call me a champion of procrastination. But let’s not dwell on that for now. Instead, allow me to properly introduce myself, albeit concisely.

Greetings once again! My name is Alen Širola (pronounced she-Rolah), and I consider myself a “full-spread” developer, primarily focusing on WordPress-related code and projects since 2008.

It all began with a project my wife and I had planned for our family business – a directory for hospitality companies in our country. After experimenting with various technologies such as ASP.NET, open-source CMSs like Joomla and Drupal (along with a few others whose names escape me), we stumbled upon WordPress. To cut a long story short, the rest, as they say, is history. Well, not entirely. Here’s what followed:

In the midst of battling the economic aftermath of 2008, we had to abandon the hospitality directory project after a few years. We then ventured into creating and selling premium themes on Envato, which continued until recently (around 2020). Throughout this period, we worked on numerous client projects, all built and maintained using WordPress, and even developed a medium-sized WooCommerce shop.

After producing a dozen premium themes, developing a couple of plugins, writing thousands (if not millions) of lines of code, and handling countless support tickets, I find myself ready to embark on yet another technological transition. The Gutenberg editor arrived in WordPress a few years ago, ushering in a new era of change, while we were stuck in the “old ways of WordPress.” Now, better late than never, the time has come for me to embrace this brave new future.

And so, here it is—my blog space. With time, I hope to fill this platform with articles primarily centered around development, WordPress and WooCommerce, the Blocks, Block editor, and Full Site Editing. You may also find other content related to WordPress in general.

Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I look forward to sharing my insights and experiences with you along the way.
